Ellery

“That depends. Do you have something to tell me?” I ask Cooper.

My heart beats harder as I wait for him to answer. We’ve denied this for so long. I’m the one who made him promise we’d only ever be friends because I was so scared. The feeling of losing him was too great to bear, but after Bradley put a wedge between us and I almost did lose him, I’m done keeping him at arm’s length.

“Elle, you know I love you.”

“I know you do.”

He slides closer, taking the blanket from my lap and placing his hand on the side of my face, his thumb running along my cheek. “There’s no turning back,” he whispers, his lips growing closer.

“I know.”

“As much as I want to promise if we don’t work out, I’ll still be your best friend, I can no longer guarantee that.”

I nod. “I know.”

“Are you sure?”

“Coop?”

He doesn’t say anything but waits for me to speak again.

“Kiss me.”

That panty-melting smile with both dimples transforms his face. “You don’t have to tell me twice.”

Inch by inch, breath by breath, second by second, he moves closer until his lips are on mine. Tentative at first, as if he’s dipping his toes in a pool to feel the temperature.

All the anxiety that had been racing through my veins disappeared. All the worries that it would feel like I was kissing a brother vanished. All the nerves that he wouldn’t want me are burned away in the fire. From the briefest of touches, it’s there, the electricity we’ve been denying for years.

“Fuck, Elle.” He says my name like a prayer as his hand slides to the back of my head, tilting it how he wants and diving in for a deeper kiss.

I open my mouth for him, and he slides his tongue in, exploring. When our tongues glide together, the best sound erupts from his throat as his hand tightens on my neck and his lips press firmer.

I cling to his arms, never wanting him to leave me, then I slide down the couch as he spreads my legs with his thigh. The yoga pants I’m wearing do nothing to block the feeling of his large bulge against my core. Our lips turn frantic, and I can’t get close enough to him, my hands roaming up under the hem of his shirt.

He takes it by the collar and pulls it over his head, throwing it to the side.

I’ve seen Cooper’s stomach plenty of times. Hell, the world has seen his stomach, but I allow the tips of my fingers to ghost down the dips and valleys of his abs. “God, you are…”

His head falls to the crook of my neck, sprinkling teasing kisses along my jaw and neck. “It’s always been you, Elle. I’ve never wanted anyone the way I want you.”

His breath causes a shiver to run up my spine.
